Alexej Gorlatch, Piano

Alexej Gorlatch was born in Kiev in 1988 and soon moved to Germany with his family as a three-year-old. From the age of eleven, numerous awards at national and international competitions have marked the career path of the Ukrainian pianist.
Recent achievements have included winning First Prize at the AXA Piano competition in Dublin and the Silver Medal at the prestigious 2009 Leeds Piano competition in the UK which The Guardian praised as “a performance of Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto that was immaculate in its poetry and aggression.” Alexej Gorlatch, whose gifts were recognised early, was admitted to the University of Arts in Berlin at the age of twelve.
In 2006, while still a junior student at the University of Music and Drama in Hanover with Professor Karl-Heinz Kämmerling, he won the First Prize at the famous Hamamatsu International Piano Competition in Japan and was the winner of the renowned 2008 German Music Competition, the first pianist to gain this commendation in the last 15 years. He has appeared as a guest artist at the International Chopin Festival in Duszniki-Zdroj, the Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Music Festivals and, amongst other prestigious concert venues, has given highly acclaimed performances at Carnegie Hall, New York, Salle Cortot in Paris, Kioi Hall, Tokyo and the Leipzig Gewandhaus. He has also performed concertos with leading Japanese orchestras including the NHK, Tokyo Symphony and Nagoya Philharmonic, as well as appearing in concert with the Hallé Manchester, Johannesburg Philharmonic, the State National Orchestra of the Ukraine and orchestras throughout Germany.

“Finesse and maturity … expressive and musical … a heartfelt, dignified and soulful performance …” The New York Times
