Baden-Baden has a remarkable tradition as a home to orchestras. A confirmed ensemble of musicians is mentioned as early as 1460 but the official founding year of the symphony orchestra is 1854. The guest books of the orchestra are a who’s who of the history of music: Franz Liszt, Hector Berlioz, Jacques Offenbach, Johann Strauss, Johannes Brahms, Hans von Bülow, Richard Strauss, Enrico Caruso, Pietro Mascagni, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Béla Bartók, Bruno Walter, Benjamino Gigli, Renata Tebaldi, Edita Gruberova, José Carreras, Placido Domingo appears six times and also Anna Netrenko – all of them shared a stage with the Philharmonic. In the last few years, international guest performances and tours have brought the orchestra international acclaim. Television and radio productions have documented the creative process. Today, the Philharmonic performs a complete range of philharmonic sounds – everything from intimate chamber music matinees and regular symphony concerts, to open air events with several thousand audience members. Since 2007, Pavel Baleff has been the principal conductor of the orchestra.
