Gevorg Gharabekyan, Conductor

Communication through music, passionate expression, stylistic diversity, and a historically informed approach to each work are the artistic credo with which Gevorg Gharabekyan directs the I TEMPI chamber orchestra. He has already made three CDs and a number of live recordings with the ensemble.

Gevorg Gharabekyan has conducted orchestras such as the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Argovia Philharmonic, Beethoven Orchestra Bonn, and National Chamber Orchestra of Armenia. From 2009 to 2011 he studied conducting at the Lucerne School of Music with Ralf Weikert. Conducting professor Jorma Panula, who referred to Gevorg Gharabekyan as a “hypermusical conductor,” had a significant influence on him. Masterclasses with Riccardo Muti, David Zinman, Neeme Järvi, Paavo Järvi, Tugan Sokhiev, Daniele Gatti, and Gennady Rozhdestvensky were also of great importance.

Born in Armenia, Gevorg Gharabekyan originally began his musical career as a violinist. His violin studies led him to Rainer Kussmaul in Freiburg and to Adelina Oprean in Basel. As a violinist, he performed in various chamber ensembles and served as concertmaster with orchestras in Switzerland and Germany.
