Michael Gielen, Conductor

Michael Gielen’s (1927–2019) active life took him back to Vienna again and again, and often to conduct from the podium of the RSO Vienna. Vienna was the first place the Gielen
family stopped as they fled National Socialism. Michael Gielen returned to Europe from exile in Argentina, making a name for himself as a conductor of contemporary music. Among other works, Die Soldaten (The Soldiers) by Bernd Alois Zimmermann was premiered in 1965.
